SOP for Operation and Maintenance of Fire Extinguishers

OBJECTIVE
To provide a procedure for the operation and maintenance of fire extinguishers.

SCOPE
It applies to all the fire extinguishers at XYZ Limited.

RESPONSIBILITY
  1. It is the responsibility of firefighters to use the fire extinguishers as per this procedure.
  2. It is the responsibility of Maintenance personnel for monthly/yearly checks of fire extinguishers as per this SOP.
  3. It is the responsibility of the QA Manager to ensure compliance as per this SOP.

Types of Fire Extinguishers used at XYZ Limited:
  1. Dry Chemical Powder fire extinguisher.
  2. Carbon Dioxide fire extinguisher.
  3. Hose reel fire extinguisher.


PROCEDURE
Operation:
  • Operation of Dry Chemical Powder fire extinguisher and Carbon Dioxide fire extinguisher:
  1. Break the seal and remove the security clip.
  2. Aim at the base of the fire.
  3. Squeeze the trigger to discharge.


  • Operation of Hose reel fire extinguisher:
  1. Turn on the valve.
  2. Run out the hose.
  3. Open the nozzle and aim at the base of the fire.
  • The dry chemical powder fire extinguishers and the carbon dioxide fire extinguishers shall be used for chemical and electrical fires.
  • Hose reel fire extinguishers shall be used for ordinary fires.
  • Do not use hose-reel fire extinguishers for electrical fires.


Maintenance:
  • Recharge the dry chemical powder fire extinguisher and carbon dioxide fire extinguisher after every use. If not used, they shall be recharged annually.
  • Check for leakages in all types of fire extinguishers once in every month or when necessary.
  • Check the hose reel fire extinguishers every month for water discharge.
  • Clean all the fire extinguishers at least once a week.
  • Label all the fire extinguishers appropriately, mentioning the date of service and the due date of service to be done.
  • Annual maintenance of all the fire extinguishers will be done by the service provider.
