SOP for Use and Care of Balance

OBJECTIVE
To lay down a procedure for the Use and care of balances.

SCOPE
This procedure applies to the pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities of XYZ Limited.

RESPONSIBILITY
The Quality Control Chemist is responsible for the implementation of the process.
The Quality Control Manager is responsible for the execution of the procedure.

PROCEDURE
  • Before you start weighing make sure that the pan and floor of the balance are clean.
  • Test the adjustment of the balance by:
  1. Check the spirit level.
  2. Check that release and arrest mechanisms are working freely and smoothly.
  3. Check whether a zero point is obtained readily.


  • Never place the sample directly upon the balance pan.
  • Hot substances must be allowed to cool to room temperature before weighing.
  • Any spillage on the balance pan or floor must be cleaned immediately.
  • Operate the levers and knobs slowly and carefully.
